FACETS- My Self Portrait

FACETS
For this rendition for a self-portrait, I used origami folds to showcase the idea that we are made of different versions of ourselves. Hair is a visual symbol that see to twist and grow
into each other, linking these different versions of oneself. This imagery has specifically been inspired by the artist Ana Mendieta, and the myths of Ophelia and Medusa.
THINKING THEMATICALLY
Over the process of developing my portfolio, I wanted to present ideas that represent who I am. I therefore worked on several visual mind maps to explore the theme of identity, culture, passion and body image.

VISUAL INSPIRATIONS
While ideating my self portrait, I looked at a lot of art styles and works of art that matched my ideas and visual language. My representation of myself using my hair made me take inspiration from the representation of Medusa and the famous artwork of Ophelia. As I was exploring the connection between ourself and nature, I looked at the work of Ana Mendieta and the artform of landart to explore how they expressed the connection between nature and the human form.
This was another version of my self portrait wherein I have taken inspiration from Land-art and used it along with my skill of making stop motion animations to express the connect I felt between nature and humans.
REFLECTIONS
Expanding my interpretation on the contradiction of personality, I developed my still life composition. Here, I experimented with shadows and reflections, as it being a visual and conceptual idea, through photography. Further, I developed my composition digitally. I made use of origami, pen illustration, photography and digital rendering. The composition explains the multiplicity of personalities through the two reflections of the flower which I have used as a metaphor for a young adult who is trying to find his identity through various means.
